I snacked on these hazelnuts while sipping on a cup of Tokyo from Harney & Sons. The rich sweetness of the hazelnuts complemented the sweet, nutty tones of the sesame seeds as well as brought out some of the more elusive caramel notes. I liked the way the sea salt on the nuts offered contrast to the sweetness of the tea. Very enjoyable.
What I Think:
These filberts taste so fresh!
I’ll be honest with you, I don’t usually buy hazelnuts on their own. However, we do occasionally buy mixed nuts, and even though these tend to be peanut and almond heavy, every once in a while I’ll come across a hazelnut. But they were never as sweet or crunchy as these.
These nuts have been dry roasted which gives them a toasty taste that complements the naturally sweet, nutty flavor of the filbert. And the salt seems to have been cooked on the nut rather than just sprinkled with the salt, it seems to have formed a delicate coating of salt on the nut, which gives it a delicious salty flavor. Most salted nuts seem a bit “powdery” but these are not. I don’t have a fine layer of salt on my fingers after eating these.
Of course, nuts are very healthy, however, I must say that these hazelnuts from Freddy Guys taste more like a treat than health food. Since they ARE healthy, though, that makes it all that much better to snack on these instead of your typical salty snack.
My Final Thoughts:
I really enjoyed these. I finished half of the 4 ounce package that came in the Portland tasting box, and it was only with considerable willpower that I managed to wrap up the remainder of the package to save for another day. They are so good … it’s hard to stop munching on them!
